Evan didn’t like the morgue. It was cold, and everything he looked at seemed to be steel.

Everything except the body covered with a sheet that lay on one of the tables.

He wasn’t sure how Win had managed to get him five minutes with Fowler, and he didn’t care. The how didn’t matter. What mattered was that Evan would never have to look at the man after today. He’d never have to obey his orders, to let him touch him, to allow him to threaten him. He’d never have to be afraid, not of Fowler.

“Evan?”

Evan shook himself at the sound of Gregory’s voice. He was glad Gregory had agreed to come with him, but he understood his mate might be uncomfortable. He was, too. But in his case, it didn’t matter, because it was so important for him to be there. He could forget the discomfort. He had a good reason to. Gregory didn’t, though, and Evan didn’t want him to be uncomfortable.

He swallowed and strode to the body. He stopped by the head and reached out for the sheet. He paused for a second, gathered his thoughts, and folded the sheet back.

He had a hard time recognizing Rand Fowler. He’d seen the man lots of times while he was alive. He could see this was the same man, but his face was like a mask, stiff and pale. It was Fowler, though, and something in Evan’s chest loosened, finally relaxing after months of tension.

He was free.

He pulled the sheet back up and looked at Gregory and Dasha. “I’m ready to go home.”

Dasha shivered. “Good. I hate this place.”

He held his hands out, and Gregory and Evan took them. Evan was relieved when they shimmered into the warehouse. This part of his life was over, and he’d come out of it better than he could have imagined. Rand Fowler was gone from his life. He hadn’t lost his family and his friends, or even his job, and Beck had Fowler’s computer, which hopefully would lead them to more of the people who wanted to kill them. Things could be better. But they also could be much worse.

“Thanks,” he told Dasha.

Dasha nodded and left. Now Evan was alone with Gregory, and he wasn’t sure where they stood. He knew what he wanted—what he needed—but he didn’t want to take advantage of Gregory. They hadn’t talked about their relationship, and he wasn’t sure he was ready to. “Gregory...” he started, but he wasn’t sure how to finish it.

Gregory stepped in front of Evan. He looked down at him, gentle and strong. “Whatever you need, Evan. I promise you won’t hurt me or anything. Whatever you need.”

“I need you.”

Gregory smiled. “Then you have me.”

“I want—”

Gregory put his hands on Evan’s shoulders. He rubbed Evan’s collarbones with his thumbs. “Whatever you need, Evan. We don’t have to talk about it, not if you’re not ready, and I understand if you’re not. A lot has happened today. You don’t have to add more to your plate by thinking about us.
